EML
The NUS Electronic Music Lab (EML) is a vibrant collective of students dedicated to composing, producing, and performing original electronic music since 1981. EML embraces a wide array of genres, from heavy metal and hip-hop to euphoric trance and dark synth, encouraging members to explore and blend styles freely. The group not only provides opportunities for networking and showcasing their work but also focuses on teaching music production skills. With the help of our mentor Benjamin Ang, we aim to foster the growth of the local electronic music scene.
Benjamin Ang
Ben never left NUS EML after graduating and for years has continued making electronic music with EML and helping generations of new EML members to make their own electronic music too. He teaches students how to create, record, and perform electronic music as Principal Tutor of NUS EML, and as the lead music instructor (Ableton Certified Trainer) at Pop Studio Academy. He records and performs electronic music as half of synthpop duo Cosmic Armchair, and as solo electronic improvisation and remix artist Abyss Simian.
Tan E-Reng
TAN E-RENG / FALLING ISLANDS is a Singapore-based electronic musician, DJ, and synthesist who produces and performs music within a wide plethora of genres, with over fourteen years of experience working with Logic Pro and Ableton Live. They also currently serve as the Assistant Tutor to the NUS Electronic Music Lab.
On top of regularly releasing their own music as Falling Islands on Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp and all major platforms, they have also done scoring, sound design and soundtrack work, most notably for the 2019 mobile puzzle game Takoway, and the 2021 hybrid live-show/short film “Past . Presence . Future .” produced under the NUS Electronic Music Lab in collaboration with the NUS Dance Ensemble, and premiered at the NUS Arts Festival 2021. They also maintain a YouTube channel where they upload videos of their experiments in synthesis and sound design.
E-Reng is currently also the Resident DJ of Singapore-based cybergoth rave collective, Blacklight Tribe. They are also an active committee member of the Synth Commune of Singapore, a music collective centered on celebrating experimental electronic music with hardware synthesizers.
Scintillating journeys through the darkest and brightest, and the gentlest and wildest extremities of electronic music are what you can always expect at their shows. Hold on tight.
